Spalding County, created in 1851, took its territory from Fayette, Henry and Pike counties. It is named for Thomas Spalding of Frederica who was the first Georgian known to have harvested cotton and cane successfully. Spalding also served as a state legislator, congressman and member of the 1798 Constitutional Convention. Griffin, the county seat, owes its name to the first president of the Monroe Railroad, L. L. Griffin.
